SKAO
The Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) is one of the most ambitious science projects on Earth. Headquartered in the UK, with telescopes in Australia and South Africa, SKAO is building the world’s largest radio telescope network to answer the biggest questions about our universe — and in the process, inspiring collaboration, innovation, and human curiosity on a global scale.
The Signal
How do you tell the story of something this monumental?
SKAO needed images that documented the journey of their very first SKA-Mid radio dish — shipped to South Africa, transported to the Karoo, assembled piece by piece, and finally switched on. These images weren’t just about hardware; they had to spark imagination, attract new countries to invest, and make the world take notice of the groundbreaking work happening in this remote desert.
The obstacle: SKAO’s site is one of the most RF-sensitive places on the planet. Strict access, limited time windows, and rigorous equipment testing meant every second on site had to count.
The Frequency We Tuned Into
Patience and precision became the strategy.
Over several months, we timed multiple site visits to coincide with weekly maintenance days and international VIP tours. With limited access, we had to be agile — ready to capture progress in small increments while never interfering with operations.
By weaving together moments of engineering detail, sweeping desert landscapes, and the human focus of scientists and technicians at work, we built a visual narrative that felt both technical and epic — a story of people, innovation, and discovery.
In the process, we also documented SKAO’s social impact outreach projects and their collaborations with several SMMEs. These stories of community engagement and local empowerment added much-needed depth, showing that SKAO isn’t only building telescopes — it’s building futures. This broader lens was integral in inspiring international partners and investors to see the full scale of the project’s impact.
The Transmission
The result is an image bank that doesn’t just record milestones, but conveys the sense of history in the making.
Technical credibility — every stage of assembly and operation documented with precision.
Human connection — portraits and candid shots that highlight the global teamwork behind the dish.
Community impact — showcasing outreach and SMME partnerships that amplify SKAO’s value beyond science.
Inspiration — visuals that make the work feel as big and bold as the science itself.
These images have since been used across SKAO’s magazine Contact, in press packs, recruitment campaigns, and social media — positioning the project as not just a telescope, but a beacon of global collaboration, innovation, and social impact.
